FUN FACTS
- The origin of the name "Panda" is the Nepalese word for red panda - "Nigalya poonya"- which means "eater of bamboo.”
- Red panda's are can be called "Firefox."
- The red panda is the ORIGINAL panda. It was first described in 1821, 48 years before the giant panda was found.
- Red Pandas claws are sharp and can be pulled back like a cat.
- Like giant pandas, red pandas have an extra “thumb,” which is an enlarged bone for grabbing bamboo stems.
- Popular web browser Mozilla Firefox is named after the red panda. Mozilla also occasionally (mostly in winter) hosts a program called Firefox Live, which broadcast live young red panda cubs and provides a link to RPN’s conservation program of red pandas in the wild.
